Job Summary:

The Estimation Engineer is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for ship repair projects. This role involves analyzing project requirements, evaluating material and labor costs, and developing comprehensive proposals. The Estimation Engineer will work closely with project managers, procurement teams, and clients to ensure estimates are competitive, precise, and align with project specifications.

Primary Responsibilities :

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cost Estimation:

  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for ship repair projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Analyze technical drawings, specifications, and other documents to define the scope of work.
  • Use estimation software and tools to ensure accuracy and efficiency in estimates.

2. Project Evaluation:

  • Assess the feasibility of ship repair projects, identifying potential risks and challenges.
  • Conduct site visits when necessary to gather relevant information and evaluate existing conditions.
  • Collaborate with project managers to understand project timelines and requirements.

3. Proposal Preparation:

  • Develop comprehensive proposals, including cost breakdowns and timelines, for clients.
  • Ensure that all estimates comply with company standards and client specifications.
  • Present estimates to clients, explaining details, and negotiating terms as needed.

4. Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of estimates, proposals, and project-related documentation.
  • Prepare regular reports on estimation activities and project progress.
  • Update estimation databases with historical data for future use.

5. Collaboration:

  • Work closely with procurement teams to obtain accurate pricing for materials and subcontractor services.
  • Liaise with engineering and production teams to ensure estimates align with technical and production requirements.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, providing input on budgets and schedules.

6. Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated on industry trends, pricing fluctuations, and advancements in estimation techniques.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements in estimation methodologies and tools.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Marine, or a related field).
  • 3-5 years of experience in cost estimation, preferably in ship repair or the maritime industry.
  • Strong knowledge of ship repair processes, materials, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in estimation software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification in cost estimation or project management.
  • Experience with ERP systems and project management software.
  • Knowledge of maritime industry regulatory requirements and compliance.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare labor and material cost estimates for ship repair quotes, tenders, and inquiries.
  • Review technical drawings and develop detailed scopes of work for each project.
  • Coordinate with the sales team and clients to meet project expectations, conducting site and vessel visits when required.
  • Provide cost estimates for additional work and variation orders, ensuring client approval before starting any alterations.
  • Assist operations teams with planning and billing preparation for ongoing projects.
  • Monitor job progress against estimates for time, cost, and project planning, reporting deviations as necessary.
  • Coordinate with external vendors or subcontractors to gather pricing and ensure accurate estimation.
  • Update senior management on project progress and potential issues, adhering to budget plans.

Competencies:

  • Diploma in a relevant field or significant experience in ship repair estimation.
  • Sound knowledge of labor costs, job times, and materials required for ship repairs.
  • Familiarity with commercial, rigs, Navy, and Coast Guard ship repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, creating Bill of Materials (BOM) accordingly.
  • Knowledge of repair standards, class requirements, and regulatory compliance in the ship repair industry.
  • Proficient in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Project.
  • Strong ability to develop detailed project scopes, bar charts, and plans for each assignment.
